Health and Safety at Work etc. 1974 Act

ABOUT THIS POLICY STATEMENT
This policy statement is in three sections:

  • Section A  makes a general declaration based on your obligations
under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act.
Then it says who is responsible for what.

  • Section B  deals with certain general arrangements that apply to most or all premises.

  • Section C  deals with particular hazards that may or may not apply to you.

Remember that all employees have responsibilities under the law,
to take care of the health and safety of themselves and others,
and to co-operate with you in doing that.

We have developed this document from Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance.
This document is not to be considered as definitive.

The reason we chose this format was to provide a basis for an adequate and sufficient policy statement that reflects local health and safety arrangements. We DO NOT expect you to adhere strictly to the format. Use the sections of the document (or add sections) that are relevant to your operation. We would draw your attention to Level One Policy document (01010.SHE) Group Health and Safety Policy.

WHY HAVE A HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY STATEMENT?

Every firm employing five or more people must by law write down its policy for their safety and health, and show it to an inspector if requested. To ensure a degree of uniformity Greencore Group has decided to follow the example provided by HSE.

An explicit safety policy demonstrates to your employees that you care for their welfare. Writing it down helps you think through the arrangements you have made.

This document contains the required format for the Health and Safety Policy Statement for companies operating within the Greencore Group Group . It aims to save you time, and to help you write a statement that covers all important matters. (See 01010.SHE).

The format has been designed to help group factories to work within a common framework. The law requires you to have a written statement of your general policy describing your "organisation and arrangements" for carrying out the policy, and that you must bring it and any revision to your employees' attention.

This document will help you to do that. First read the notes then fill in the blank spaces and keep the completed document as your statement.

A copy of the Group Policy Statement (01010.SHE) must be attached to the front of the document.

Operating companies are obliged to complete risk assessments and additional sections may need to be included.

Keep your original statement in a place where it is easy to get at, so it can be presented to a Health and Safety Inspector on request. Copies must be made available to all employees.
