Use of Safety Signs, Notices and Posters.

When are Safety Signs required?

Safety signs are to be used
where a risk assessment indicates that a risk can not be avoided
or
engineered out
or
reduced significantly by way of a Safe System of Work.

What about Road Traffic Signs?
Where there is a risk arising from the movement of traffic
on a company road, the signs stipulated by the Road Traffic Act must be used.

Maintenance of Safety Signs and Posters:
All signs, posters and notices must be maintained
in an adequate state of repair and kept clean.

What Colour must a Safety Sign be and what do they mean?
The Basic Design of Safety Signs:


Colour Red	Meaning and Purpose	Instructions and Information
Red
Fire-fighting equipment	Identification and location	Intrinsic features rectangular or square shape (the red part to take up at least 50% 0f the area of the sign).
Prohibition Sign Intrinsic features round shape COLOUR AND SHAPE WHITE, CIRCULAR SIGN. RED BORDER AND A RED CROSSBAR RUNNING FROM THE TOP LEFT TO THE BOTTOM RIGHT.	Danger PROHIBITION SIGN USE: STATES THAT YOU CAN'T DO	Dangerous behaviour, stop, shutdown, emergency cutout services, Evacuate. Black pictogram on white background, red edging and diagonal line (the red part to take up at least 35% of the sign)

Intrinsic features rectangular or square shape. White pictogram on green background (the green part to take up at least 50% of the sign)
