First Aid Policy

OPERATIONAL POLICY
The Greencore Group is committed to providing sufficient numbers
of qualified first-aid personnel to deal with accidents and injuries occurring at work.

To this end, the company will provide information and training on first-aid to employees, to ensure that statutory requirements and the needs of the individual and the organisation are met. The Company will also ensure that adequate medical boxes, containing the Approved Code of Practice recommended Stores, are held at appropriate locations throughout the factory and office premises.

LEGISLATION
The contents of this procedure have been checked against all relevant current UK Legislation at the time of writing and at each amendment stage. However current Legislation should be checked, specific to the particular application and context, each time the procedure is used, to ensure its continuing validity.

RESPONSIBILITY
The H & S Competent Person has overall responsibility for ensuring that the requirements of this procedure are met. H & S Competent Person is responsible, or the day to day requirements of this procedure, within their own departments. All employees have a duty to report any concerns that they have about the provision of first-aid within the organisation, in order that the company may investigate and rectify the situation, as necessary.

METHODOLOGY

First-aid Personnel: The Company has selected from a number of volunteers employees who have been assessed as being suitable for the role of first-aid personnel. In situations where certificated First-Aid Personnel are not available due to unscheduled absence, or in exceptional circumstances, it is accepted as suitable compliance with the Regulations, that an Appointed Person may take charge of:
Any situation where an ill or injured person requires attention
from a medical practitioner or nurse ;
Any first-aid equipment and facilities while the suitable First-Aider is absent.

An Appointed Person should not render any first-aid treatment, other than emergency first-aid, and then only where they have been specifically trained in these procedures, but should be responsible for calling for professional assistance. The provision of an Appointed Person may not be considered as a full-time alternative for a trained and qualified First-Aider. The only exception is where, having regard to the location and nature of the undertaking, there are no specific hazards and where the number of employees is small. First-aiders are qualified personnel who have received training, and have passed an examination, in accordance with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements. The Company will ensure that there are sufficient first -aid personnel at all times, including shift and overtime working, at all work locations.

Legal Indemnity:
It is unlikely that first-aid personnel rendering assistance would become subject to legal action because of deterioration in a colleague's condition. However, the company has arranged to guard against this possibility, by providing, through its insurance policies, indemnification for any member of staff who assists an employee who has had an accident or has become ill at work, either on or off the premises.

First-Aid Boxes:
First-aid boxes are provided at all workplaces, to ensure that there are adequate supplies for the nature of the hazards involved. All boxes contain at least the minimum supplies which are scheduled in the Approved Code of Practice. Only specified supplies are kept. The location of first-aid boxes, and the name of the person responsible for their upkeep, is clearly indicated on notice boards, throughout the workplace. First-aid boxes display the following information:

a) The name of the person responsible for their upkeep.
b) The nearest location for further supplies.
c) The contents of the first-aid box, and arrangements for replenishing.
d) The location for the accident book.

First-aid boxes are maintained by the H & S Competent Person, or authorised delegate, who are aware of the procedure for re-ordering supplies.

Portable First-Aid Boxes:
Portable first-aid kits are available for those members of staff who are required
to work away, where access to facilities may be restricted. These first-aid kits are under the control of the Production Manager.

First-Aid/Recovery Room:
A room is provided to assist first-aiders when administering treatment. Access to the first-aid room is available from authorised personnel in each area of the workplace. All staff are made aware of the location of this room as part of their induction training.

Recording Accidents:
All accidents must be recorded, however minor, the company have provided an accident book, which is held in the personnel department. Full details on accident reporting, and the Statutory Reporting requirements of the RIDDOR Regulations 1995, may be found in our Accident and Near Miss Reporting Procedure.
